Alric Wildlife Consulting is seeking motivated, detail-oriented Owl Surveyors for the 2026 field season. Surveys will primarily focus on the Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis), while also requiring the ability to identify and differentiate other owl species encountered during nighttime fieldwork. Our work emphasizes the collection of high-quality ecological data to support responsible land management and wildlife conservation efforts.
Position Overview
Owl Surveyors will conduct protocol-level surveys in accordance with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service standards to determine occupancy and reproductive status of northern spotted owls. This position requires independent nighttime fieldwork, including driving and hiking to designated call points, with potential daytime follow-up surveys.
Responsibilities
Perform nighttime call-back surveys following established protocols
Conduct daytime follow-up visits to monitor known sites and investigate owl responses
Ability to differentiate and record Strix and other owl species (great horned, pygmy, and saw whet owls)
Hike off-trail in forested terrain and walk gated or overgrown roads at night
Navigate private and public forest roads using maps and GPS.
Accurately record and manage field data
Maintain professional communication and adhere to safety protocols
Work Schedule & Season
Employment period: Early March through mid- to late August 2026
Approximately 30-40 hours per week (part time work also available)
Primary working hours are sunset – early morning. Working hours vary.
Most shifts average 6-10hrs. You can determine your own workload.
Daytime follow-up hike required if Northern Spotted Owl presence is detected.
Flexibility is necessary to accommodate weather and to meet protocol timing windows.
Weekend work may be necessary, depending on weather
Overtime pay may be necessary and will be available after 40-hour work week.
Qualifications
Previous wildlife field experience preferred
Ability to work independently at night in remote forest settings
Strong navigation skills (map, compass, GPS)
Ability to hike long distances off-trail in steep or uneven terrain, while carrying essential field gear.
Comfortable working long nightshifts.
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
Compensation & Equipment
Pay: $22.50–$28 per hour, depending on experience
Company vehicle and survey equipment provided
